Scans
If you require scans or other radiological investigations, we will generally refer you to wherever your insurance will cover these scans. For some specialized scans (e.g. parathyroid CT scan), you may need to be referred specifically to the South Infirmary. Waiting time for scans may depend on the facility to which you are referred, however, if scans are urgent, we will always try to get these done quickly. For scans performed in public hospitals (CUH, South Infirmary, Mercy, University Hospital Kerry, UHW, MWRHL, STGH), or in Affidea Cork, or any Alliance Medical facility, it will be possible for Professor Sheahan to see the scans. If your scans are performed in other facilities, it will be very helpful to ask for a CD of the scans to bring with you to your consultation or to send in. If you are not able to get a CD, we will be able to request it, but depending on the facility, this may lead to delays.
Once we have received the results of the scans, we will contact you. This may be by means of a letter to let you the results, or a face-to-face or virtual return appointment. At your return appointment, we can re-evaluate your symptoms, make sure all your questions are answered, and make plans for follow-up. If you are called for a return appointment, this does not mean that there is bad news. However, we always encourage you to bring a family member or friend to return consultations, in case of any unexpected results.
