Lump in Throat

Symptoms of a sensation of a lump in the throat, throat discomfort, throat clearing, mucus in the throat, post-nasal drip, and chronic cough, are most commonly due to benign conditions such as globus pharyngeus or laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR).

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of globus pharyngeus and LPR is based on history and videolaryngoscopy.  High quality videolaryngoscopy is essential in order to detect laryngoscopic signs of LPR, but also to rule out other conditions, including throat cancers.  This procedure involves passing a flexible camera through your nose which can then examine the entire larynx and pharynx, with the images displayed on a high definition (HD) monitor. It should take less than 1-2 minutes and can be performed at the same time as your initial consultation.

Treatmemt

Treatment of globus pharyngeus and LPR may range from simple reassurance, where patients are not overly bothered by symptoms and just want to have them fully checked out, to dietary modifications and lifestyle modifications, to pharmacological treatments.  Surgery is rarely required.

Your Consultant will recommend personalized treatment if appropriate in your case after full and complete evaluation.
