Laser Surgery
Transoral laser surgery is a specialized approach where tumours of the vocal cords, larynx, tonsil, base of tongue, or pharynx can be removed through the mouth using a laser along with special instruments and an operating microscope. Laser surgery is a treatment of choice for early vocal cord cancer and pre-malignant vocal cord or laryngeal lesions and can afford cure in a single treatment with very low morbidity and without the need for radiotherapy. Transoral laser surgery may also be employed as an alternative to transoral robotic surgery for HPV-related oropharynx cancers. Suitability for transoral laser surgery needs to be assessed based on examination findings, including flexible laryngoscopy, and scans. Professor Sheahan performs a high volume of laser surgeries in the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital and will be able to advise if you are suitable for this approach.
